Understanding parenting
The word parenting is widely used by most of us but only a few of us actually understand it. It is one of the biggest responsibilities that life brings to you. You can call it a process that prepares your child for life. Most of us find problems in some of the others when it comes to nurturing them.
What is good parenting?
Good parenting is characterized by consistency and routine in the first place. Matching up with their expectations and needs while keeping them disciplined and in control is all that good parenting can be called. It in general accounts for the following points:
● Disciplining
● Controlling
● Building resilience
● Socializing
What is parenting counseling?
Parenting counseling is a valuable and important service offering you rational, emotional, unbiased guidance and help where you need to meet up the expectations of your children and family as a whole.
Once your child has crossed a certain age where you have guided them with walking, talking, and eating, you further move on to teach them life lessons. Some of them might include:
● Holding up a conversation
● Dealing with challenges
● Solving conflicts
● Making decisions
For all these to turn up with the best outcomes, people go for parenting counseling. Because taking care of the child is not the only aspect one focuses on at a particular point in time.

Types
No children come with manuals, making it difficult for parents to handle and raise them. While some are lenient as parents, others are strict. There are a few styles one can go for, namely, permissive, authoritative, neglectful, and authoritarian. Each of these styles has different impacts on a child’s behavior and development in terms of responsiveness and demandingness.
Permissive Parenting
This style is more towards being friends than seriously with set rules. It focuses more on avoiding conflicts and often bows to their children’s pleas at the first sign of distress. Parents with this style usually allow their children to do what they want and pose limited or little direction and guidance.
Some of the common traits of permissive counseling include:
● Low demandingness
● High responsiveness
● Open communications
● Less direction giving
● No rules and expectations enforcing
● Allowing kids to decide on their own
Authoritative Parenting
Authoritative parents are said to be nurturing, supportive, and often in tune with their children’s needs. They practice open and honest discussions to guide their children to teach values and reasoning. Kids having authoritative parents tend to be more self-disciplined and can think for themselves.
Some of the common traits are:
● High demandingness
● High responsiveness
● Setting clear rules, regulations, and expectations
● Communicating frequently with kids
● Considering children’s thoughts
● Giving space for natural consequences.
Neglectful Parenting
Also referred to as uninvolved parenting, this style is characterized by an overall feeling of indifference. The parents are hardly engaged with children, and rules implementations are rare in such cases. Parents following this style are careless and cold towards their kids, intentionally or unintentionally.
The common traits are:
● Low responsiveness
● Low demandingness
● Offering little guidance and attention
● Struggling with one’s own needs and relationships
● Letting kids fend for themselves
● Being indifferent to kid’s needs and expectations
Authoritarian Parenting
This comes under a very rigid and stiff parenting style. Parents use stern discipline which they name as “ tough love”. Such parents don’t consider their children’s input or feedback while talking.
The traits of authoritarian parenting are as follows:
● High demandingness
● Low responsiveness
● Enforcing strict rules
● Hardly considering kid’s feelings and emotions
● Imposing unnecessary rules without any justifications
● Practicing one-way communication.
